Trump claims credit for Gaza ceasefire deal, calls it an ‘epic agreement’

US President-elect Donald Trump has claimed credit for the recent ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas, which was announced just days before his return to power.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed excitement over the deal and asserted that it would not have been possible without his leadership.

“We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly. Thank you!” Trump wrote, even before the White House, under outgoing President Joe Biden, made an official announcement.

In another post, Trump stated, “This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November,” referring to his win in the 2024 presidential election.

Trump highlighted his administration’s focus on peace in the Middle East, crediting his previous achievements, such as the Abraham Accords, for laying the groundwork for the current agreement.

The ceasefire deal involves a phased approach, with Hamas releasing 33 of the approximately 100 hostages held in Gaza over a 42-day period. Trump noted that his special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, played a critical role in facilitating the agreement alongside Biden’s negotiators.

“We will continue to work closely with Israel and our Allies to make sure Gaza never again becomes a terrorist safe haven,” Trump wrote, reiterating his administration’s commitment to supporting Israel and its allies.

The agreement represents a significant development in the conflict’s dynamics. While the Biden administration had been negotiating for months, Trump credited his administration’s influence and groundwork for making the deal possible. Trump also hinted at the possibility of future peace deals, including the potential inclusion of Iran in the Abraham Accords.

Reactions to the agreement have been mixed. In Gaza, celebrations erupted, with residents honking horns and cheering in the streets. However, in Israel, many remain cautious, expressing doubt that the deal will be fully trusted until all hostages are safely returned.

The ceasefire marks a critical step toward de-escalation, but the region’s path to lasting peace remains uncertain.
