Trump Claims He Does Not Care About Harris’s Racial Identity
Former President Donald Trump stated that he does not care about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.
Harris, who has both Indian and Jamaican heritage, identifies as Black and Indian American. “I don’t, and I don’t care,” Trump said during a presidential debate, referring to earlier remarks. “I don’t care what she is. I don’t care if you make a big deal out of it. I couldn’t care less. Whatever she wants to be is okay with me.”
When moderators pressed him about his previous comments, Trump responded, “I don’t know. I mean, all I can say is, I read that she wasn’t Black and then I read that she was Black. Either one is okay with me. That’s up to her.”
In July, Trump had commented at a Black journalists’ conference, “I didn’t know she was Black until a few years ago when she identified as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or Black?”
In response to Trump’s latest statements, Harris criticized his approach. “It’s tragic that someone aspiring to be President continuously tries to use race to divide Americans,” she said. “Most of us understand that we have more in common than what separates us, and we don’t want divisive rhetoric, especially by race.”
Harris also recalled past controversies involving Trump, including his refusal to rent property to Black families and his call for the execution of the Central Park Five, who were later exonerated. “This is the same individual who spread falsehoods about the first Black President,” she added. “Americans deserve a leader who sees each other as friends and neighbors, not someone who fosters division.”
Trump responded by attacking Harris’s claims. “This is the most divisive President in our history. They’re destroying our country, and she brings up things from many years ago. The Central Park Five case was supported by many, including Mayor Bloomberg, and they admitted to pleading guilty,” he said. “I built one of the greatest economies in history, and I will build it again.”
