Hormuz Strait to fully reopen by Friday after Iran agreement, says Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday welcomed a newly signed agreement with Iran, describing it as a significant step toward reducing tensions in the Middle East, preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, and restoring stability to global energy markets.
Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, both leaders said the agreement could have far-reaching implications for regional security and international trade.
Macron called the accord an important breakthrough, saying it addresses concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program while creating opportunities for broader peace efforts across the region.
“This agreement is important for peace and stability, not only for the Middle East but for the entire world,” Macron said. He added that France and its partners are prepared to support implementation efforts and contribute to regional peace initiatives, including in Lebanon.
Trump stated that the agreement was already producing visible results, noting that commercial vessels had begun moving again through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes for oil and energy exports.
“The Strait is already partially open, and by Friday it will be completely reopened,” Trump said.
According to Trump, the agreement includes strict monitoring provisions designed to ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons. He described the deal as a major diplomatic achievement and said it could help reduce instability across the Gulf region.
The U.S. President also pointed to falling oil prices and rising stock markets as early indicators of improved investor confidence following the announcement.
Trump said the memorandum of understanding behind the agreement would be released publicly in the coming days. He also indicated that Vice President JD Vance would represent the United States at the formal signing ceremony.
With the Iran agreement nearing implementation, Trump said his administration would now increase focus on efforts to advance negotiations aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
