Trump brokers call between Israel and Qatar after deadly missile strike

US President Donald Trump on Monday facilitated a phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, following a controversial Israeli airstrike in Qatar earlier this month.

During the call, Netanyahu expressed “deep regret” over the September 9 missile strike, which targeted Hamas leadership but inadvertently killed a Qatari serviceman and violated Qatari sovereignty. He assured that Israel would not carry out such actions again, according to a White House statement.

The Qatari Prime Minister welcomed the apology and reaffirmed Qatar’s readiness to “continue contributing meaningfully to regional security and stability.”

In an effort to repair strained ties, both leaders agreed to Trump’s proposal to create a trilateral mechanism to improve communication, resolve grievances, and strengthen joint efforts to counter regional threats. “They underscored their shared commitment to working together constructively and clearing away misperceptions,” the White House noted.

The conversation also touched on the ongoing Gaza war, with discussions reportedly focusing on potential frameworks to end the conflict.

On September 9, Israeli forces struck Hamas headquarters in Qatar during ceasefire talks, but Hamas leaders survived the attack. The strike drew international criticism, particularly as Qatar has played a key role in mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas.

Trump sought to distance his administration from the incident, clarifying on Truth Social: “This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu; it was not a decision made by me.” He added that while the bombing “does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” eliminating Hamas remains “a worthy goal.”
