Trump administration weighs meeting with Kim Jong-un during Asia visit

Officials in U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration have privately discussed the possibility of arranging a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during Trump’s upcoming visit to Asia, according to a CNN report cited by Yonhap News Agency.

While discussions have taken place, sources say there has been no formal outreach to Pyongyang or concrete logistical planning for such a meeting. “There have been no communications between Washington and Pyongyang,” the report said, adding that Trump’s previous attempts to contact Kim earlier this year went unanswered.

The White House is reportedly focused on finalizing Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the same trip. However, officials have “left the door open” for a potential dialogue with Kim should circumstances allow.

Trump’s renewed interest in engaging with Kim was reportedly sparked during his August summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House. Lee suggested that the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, scheduled for October 31 to November 1, could present an opportunity for the two leaders to meet.

South Korea’s Ambassador to the U.S., Kang Kyung-wha, said there is currently “no indication” that such a meeting is being arranged. “President Trump has said he is open to dialogue, and North Korea has also shown some inclination toward it,” Kang said during a parliamentary audit. “But as of now, there is no sign that something will materialize at the APEC summit.”

Despite the uncertainty, diplomatic watchers view this discussion as a sign of potential thawing between Washington and Pyongyang after years of stalled talks since the 2019 Hanoi summit. Any future meeting could mark a significant shift in regional diplomacy and U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific.
