
Trump sends Zelenskyy warm letter praising Ukraine as he pushes for Putin meeting
U.S. President Donald Trump praised the “courageous people” of Ukraine and their “unbreakable spirit” in a letter to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the country’s Independence Day, even as he continues to press for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“As you mark this important day, know the United States respects your fight, honors your sacrifices, and believes in your future as an independent nation,” Trump wrote in the letter shared by Zelenskyy on X. Concluding with “God bless Ukraine,” Trump reiterated U.S. support for a “negotiated settlement” that ensures lasting peace and protects Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Zelenskyy thanked Trump for the message and for “standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine.” The letter came less than a week after their Aug. 18 meeting at the White House, where Trump also met European leaders for talks on ending Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Reports suggest discussions included a potential U.S.-backed security guarantee for Ukraine. While Trump initially floated the idea of U.S. involvement in a European-led peacekeeping force, he later assured that no American troops would be deployed.
The Aug. 18 meeting marked a notable change from the leaders’ tense February exchange, when Trump criticized Zelenskyy’s attire and abruptly ended their talks. This time, Zelenskyy wore a suit, and Vice President JD Vance remained quiet after previously clashing with the Ukrainian leader.
