Trump misses Nobel peace prize, but winner dedicates award to him

US President Donald Trump did not receive the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, but the winner, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, dedicated her award to him for his support of democratic efforts in Venezuela.

Machado, a key figure opposing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, posted on X: “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause.” She has led the opposition through political and economic challenges while Maduro’s regime faces international accusations of authoritarianism and narco-terrorism.

Trump had campaigned for the Nobel Prize, citing his role in resolving global conflicts and peace efforts, including diplomacy involving India and Pakistan. However, nominations to Norway’s Parliament closed on January 31, before Trump’s recent diplomatic achievements, including an initial peace deal on Gaza. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung criticized the Nobel Committee, saying they “place politics over peace.”

Machado’s selection highlights her tireless work promoting democratic rights in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee noted that the country has shifted from relative democracy to authoritarianism, leaving most citizens in deep poverty while a few hold concentrated wealth. The committee also emphasized the global importance of defending democracy at a time when it is under threat.

Trump acknowledged Machado’s dedication on Truth Social, reposting her message that emphasized the shared goal of freedom and democracy with the United States and Latin American allies.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize had 338 nominations, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations. By honoring Machado, the committee recognized both her democratic activism and implicitly acknowledged Trump’s supportive role, even though he did not personally win the award.

Machado’s win and her dedication to Trump underscore the complex intersection of international diplomacy, political activism, and the ongoing struggle for democratic governance in Venezuela.
