Trump urges calm after massive quake triggers tsunami alert across Pacific

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged residents along the Pacific coast, Alaska, and Hawaii to stay “strong and safe” following a massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Russia’s Far East early Wednesday, triggering widespread tsunami warnings.

The quake hit off the Kamchatka Peninsula, about 119 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of nearly 180,000 people. The powerful tremor prompted immediate alerts across several Pacific nations, including the United States and Japan.

Tsunami waves between 3 and 4 meters (10 to 13 feet) were reported near the epicenter. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings and watches across multiple regions, including Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. Pacific Coast.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Trump wrote, “Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way… Stay strong and stay safe!”

In Hawaii, tsunami sirens blared across Honolulu, prompting evacuations and mass movement to higher ground. Authorities in Chile, the Solomon Islands, and New Zealand also placed their coastal regions on high alert.

The first tsunami wave struck Severo-Kurilsk, the main settlement on Russia’s Kuril Islands. Regional Governor Valery Limarenko confirmed wave activity and said preemptive evacuations had been carried out.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that waves of over 3 meters were possible in some coastal zones and urged immediate protective measures to safeguard lives and property.
