Trump backs peace deal over ceasefire to end Ukraine war

US president Donald Trump said he is dropping his demand for a ceasefire in Ukraine and instead pushing directly for a peace agreement after his summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that following late-night talks with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, it was “determined” that a peace agreement would provide a lasting solution, unlike a ceasefire which “often times do not hold up.”

European leaders and Zelensky, however, remain cautious, fearing Russia could seize more territory if fighting continues without a ceasefire in place. Zelensky emphasized on X that Ukraine seeks “real peace” but warned that “we must stop the killings as soon as possible” and called for stronger sanctions if Russia avoids honest negotiations.

Trump described his meeting with Putin as “very successful” and confirmed Zelensky would visit the White House on Monday. He added that if discussions go well, a follow-up meeting with Putin will be scheduled. Trump admitted there were unresolved differences with Putin, calling one of them “the most significant,” but said progress had been made.

European leaders, calling themselves the “Coalition of the Willing,” issued a statement backing Trump’s push for peace, while insisting Ukraine must have “ironclad security guarantees” to safeguard its sovereignty. French president Emmanuel Macron said Europe would maintain pressure on Russia until a “solid and lasting peace” is achieved.

Trump’s new approach marks a shift from his earlier insistence on an immediate ceasefire, signaling his willingness to pursue broader negotiations for a permanent settlement of the war.
