Trump threatens Russia with sanctions
US President Donald Trump on Friday warned of imposing large-scale sanctions on Russia until a ceasefire and final peace settlement is reached with Ukraine.
“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale banking sanctions, sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Addressing both nations, he urged, “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late.”
Early Friday, Russia launched a massive aerial attack on Ukraine, firing 67 missiles and 194 drones, according to Kyiv. While most were intercepted, some hit critical gas and power facilities.
Trump’s remarks mark his strongest warning to Russia since taking office for a second term. During his 2024 campaign, he claimed the war would have ended on the day he took office. He also insisted that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if he had remained president— a claim that remains untestable.
Since taking office, Trump has pressured Ukraine to prepare for a ceasefire and a final settlement. Following a tense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump announced a pause on all US aid to Ukraine, including intelligence sharing.
However, after receiving a letter of “regret” from Ukraine, Trump signaled his willingness to work with Zelensky toward peace. Officials from both sides are set to meet next week for talks, including discussions on a potential US-Ukraine agreement granting Washington access to Ukraine’s valuable rare earth mineral reserves.
