Trump says Zelensky can end Ukraine war ‘almost immediately’ as European leaders head to Washington

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could end the war with Russia “almost immediately” if he accepts some of Moscow’s conditions, a statement that sets the tone for Monday’s high-stakes meeting at the White House with Zelensky and a large European delegation.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump declared, “President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. No getting back Obama-given Crimea (12 years ago) and no going into NATO. Some things never change!”

The message underscored the pressure Zelensky will face during talks, which come just days after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Putin reiterated demands that Ukraine renounce NATO membership and cede Crimea. European leaders traveling with Zelensky — including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — fear the U.S. President may push Kyiv toward concessions.

European officials said they intend to press Trump for clarity on the scope of U.S. security guarantees and on what Russia may be willing to concede in a potential peace deal. Macron stressed that Ukraine’s allies seek a “strong and lasting peace” that respects its territorial integrity, warning that weakness toward Moscow could spark future conflicts.

Meanwhile, Trump has signaled he now favors a comprehensive peace deal rather than a ceasefire, claiming “big progress on Russia” after Alaska. But Zelensky rejected any “security guarantees” from Putin, saying he relies on U.S. commitments instead.

The Washington summit is expected to be one of the most decisive moments of the war, with the future of Ukraine’s sovereignty at stake.
