The United States Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security advisory urging American citizens in Bangladesh to remain vigilant and avoid large gatherings as political unrest and violence intensify following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the radical group Inqilab Mancha.

Hadi died on Thursday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore, six days after sustaining serious injuries. His death has sparked widespread tension and unrest across Bangladesh, prompting concerns over public safety and the deteriorating law and order situation in the country.

In a statement released on Friday, the US Embassy cited media reports indicating that Hadi’s body was expected to arrive in Dhaka later in the evening. His funeral prayers are anticipated to take place on Saturday at Manik Mia Avenue, located in front of Bangladesh’s National Parliament Building — an area that often becomes a focal point for mass political gatherings.

The embassy warned that heavy traffic disruptions are likely in and around Dhaka, particularly near the funeral site, and that spontaneous or organized demonstrations could erupt nationwide. “US citizens should exercise caution, avoid demonstrations, and remain alert, as gatherings intended to be peaceful can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence,” the advisory said.

American nationals were encouraged to reassess travel plans, allow extra time for commuting, and closely monitor local developments. The embassy also emphasized the importance of situational awareness amid unpredictable security conditions.

Bangladesh’s interim government chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus, addressed the nation on Thursday night to confirm Hadi’s death. Authorities have announced that the country will observe a National Day of Mourning on Saturday, December 20, further heightening the likelihood of large public gatherings.

International concern over Bangladesh’s security situation is growing. The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has also issued a travel advisory, warning British citizens to avoid all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The advisory cited recurring reports of violence, criminal activity, and instability, particularly in remote and sensitive regions.

“Pay close attention to local information and follow official guidance,” the UK advisory stated, highlighting risks associated with the nationwide unrest following Hadi’s death.

Bangladesh has seen a sharp increase in violent incidents in recent weeks, with clashes, protests, and sporadic criminal activity reported in multiple districts. Observers and civil society groups have raised concerns over the ability of the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, to maintain public order amid rising political polarization and extremist mobilization.

Security analysts warn that funeral events linked to politically influential figures often become flashpoints for unrest in Bangladesh, drawing large crowds and increasing the risk of confrontation between rival groups and security forces.

Diplomatic missions continue to closely monitor the evolving situation, advising foreign nationals to remain cautious, limit non-essential movement, and stay informed through official channels. As tensions persist, international partners are urging restraint and calling on Bangladeshi authorities to ensure public safety and prevent further escalation.
