US-India ties remain strong as talks on trade, Russian oil termed ‘incredibly productive’

A senior U.S. State Department official has reaffirmed that relations with India remain “strong” despite recent turbulence, stressing that ongoing discussions over trade and Russian oil purchases have been “incredibly productive.”

“We have differences, and it’s been clear,” the official said on Wednesday, noting that bilateral talks in recent weeks have made progress on contentious issues, including tariffs and India’s energy imports from Russia.

The official highlighted the appointment of Sergio Gor, a close aide to President Donald Trump, as ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asia. “Having someone close to the President based in New Delhi will strengthen the relationship and benefit the whole region,” the official said.

Gor, who played a key role in Trump’s election campaign, will primarily serve as ambassador but remain available for regional engagement when requested by the White House.

The official also confirmed that India is set to host the next Quad summit involving the U.S., Japan, and Australia, with Trump expected to attend depending on scheduling.

Acknowledging Trump’s candid style, the official downplayed social media outbursts as “transparency” rather than shifts in policy, emphasizing that India is viewed as a “good friend and partner of the future.”

On sanctions tied to Iran’s Chabahar Port and tariffs on Russian oil, the official said the measures were part of Washington’s broader campaign of “maximum pressure” on adversaries, not targeted solely at India. While India faces a 25% tariff, the official noted that U.S. lawmakers are considering far harsher penalties globally.

The official also addressed Trump’s proposal of a $100,000 annual fee for H-1B visas, which heavily impact Indian professionals, saying discussions with New Delhi showed “no major pushback.”
