‘We will come together,’ says US Treasury Secretary on trade talks with India

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent voiced optimism about reaching a trade deal with India, stressing that the two nations “will come together” despite current tensions.

In an interview with Fox News, Bessent praised the rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, saying their strong ties could help bridge differences.

The remarks came as the Trump administration raised tariffs on Indian goods by another 25%, bringing total levies to 50%. India has condemned the move as “unjustified and unfair.”

Bessent acknowledged India began trade talks early in Trump’s second term but accused New Delhi of being “performative” in negotiations.

Prime Minister Modi has consistently defended the interests of farmers and small businesses, resisting pressure for concessions.

The US Treasury Secretary also criticized India’s purchase of Russian oil, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar countered, “If you have a problem… don’t buy it.”

On BRICS trade in rupees, Bessent dismissed the idea, saying he isn’t concerned about the rupee as a reserve currency. India’s MEA has already ruled out any de-dollarisation agenda.
