US speaking with multiple Iranian leaders, not just one: Trump
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Washington is engaged in discussions with multiple Iranian leaders, suggesting a broader and more complex diplomatic outreach than previously known, even as Tehran has denied that any talks are taking place.
Speaking in an interview and later to reporters, Trump said the United States is “talking to many people” in Iran rather than dealing with a single authority. He emphasized that the initiative for dialogue came from the Iranian side.
“I didn’t call them. They called. They wanted to make a deal, and we are also willing to make a deal,” Trump said, indicating that negotiations could potentially lead to a resolution of ongoing hostilities in the Middle East.
However, his remarks appeared to contain some inconsistencies. While stating that the US was in contact with several Iranian figures, he also mentioned that discussions were being held with a “top person,” though not the country’s supreme leader. Trump added that the status of Iran’s top leadership remains uncertain, saying, “Nobody has heard from him, and we don’t know if he is living.”
The claims were quickly rejected by Iranian state media. Broadcaster IRIB dismissed Trump’s assertions as false, stating that no talks had taken place between the two countries. It accused the US President of attempting to deflect attention from recent threats targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure and reiterated that Tehran’s position on the Strait of Hormuz remains unchanged.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region. Trump had recently warned of strikes on Iranian power plants if key demands, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, were not met. He later announced a five-day pause on planned military action to allow space for potential negotiations.
Despite Iran’s denial, Trump maintained that discussions are progressing and involve “major points of agreement,” including curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions and addressing its stockpile of enriched uranium.
He also suggested that ongoing military actions had significantly weakened Iran’s leadership structure, claiming that multiple senior figures had been eliminated. According to Trump, this has created conditions that could lead to broader political changes within the country.
The situation remains fluid, with conflicting narratives from Washington and Tehran. While the US signals cautious optimism about a diplomatic breakthrough, Iran continues to deny any engagement, leaving the prospects for de-escalation uncertain.
