US-Iran conflict intensifies as Myanmar receives emergency aid and Ukraine reports civilian casualties

Fighting between the United States and Iran has intensified following a month-long lull, while humanitarian operations are expanding in flood-hit parts of Myanmar and Russian attacks in Ukraine continue to cause civilian casualties, according to the United Nations.

The latest escalation between Washington and Tehran included US military strikes on rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz. The United States said the operation was aimed at preventing Iran from laying new mines along the strategically important waterway.

Iranian authorities also reported that a US strike hit a wedding gathering in Kuhestak, killing at least four people and injuring dozens. The US military said it was investigating the incident and maintained that it does not target civilians. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over the reported civilian casualties and urged both sides to return to diplomacy.

In Myanmar, the United Nations World Food Programme has launched an emergency cargo transport service to help humanitarian organizations deliver essential supplies to communities affected by severe flooding. The service is initially focusing on several hard-to-reach areas, transporting food, medicines, water and sanitation supplies, and emergency shelter materials.

The WFP has also expanded emergency food assistance in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, which continues to face the combined effects of conflict, displacement and the aftermath of a major earthquake. The agency said it had already reached thousands of people with emergency food supplies.

Meanwhile, Russian attacks across Ukraine have killed at least 12 civilians and injured more than 65 others, according to the UN humanitarian office. Strikes damaged homes, schools, commercial facilities and energy infrastructure, causing power outages in several areas.

Humanitarian facilities have also been affected. A UNICEF-contracted warehouse in the Kyiv region was destroyed in a Russian attack, while other humanitarian warehouses, vehicles and an evacuation bus were damaged in separate incidents.

The UN warned that continued attacks are placing additional pressure on civilians and humanitarian operations as Ukraine approaches another difficult winter.
