Vance’s India visit to review ties and boost cooperation

US Vice President J.D. Vance will undertake his first official visit to India from April 21 to 24, an opportunity to review progress in bilateral ties and implement outcomes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s February visit to Washington, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.

Accompanied by Second Lady Usha Vance, their children, and senior US officials, Vice President Vance will meet Prime Minister Modi on April 21 in New Delhi. His itinerary also includes visits to Jaipur and Agra before departing on April 24.

“This visit will allow both sides to assess the status of bilateral cooperation and follow up on the outcomes of the India-US Joint Statement issued on February 13, 2025,” the MEA said, adding that discussions will include regional and global issues of mutual interest.

The White House confirmed that India will be the second leg of Vice President Vance’s two-nation tour, following a stop in Italy. This marks the first visit to India by a US Vice President in over a decade — the last was Joe Biden in 2013 under President Obama’s administration.

According to a statement from Vance’s office, “The Vice President will visit New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. He will meet with Prime Minister Modi and take part in cultural engagements with the Second Family.”

While National Security Advisor Mike Waltz’s travel plans remain unconfirmed, his visit would follow those of other senior Trump administration officials, including Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence.

Vice President Vance and PM Modi first met in February on the sidelines of the AI Summit in Paris, where the Second Lady and the couple’s two sons were also introduced to the Prime Minister.

Vance, a key figure in President Donald Trump’s cabinet, has emerged as a vocal proponent of Trump’s policy agenda. His influence has been noted in several high-profile meetings, including with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Second Lady Usha Vance, born Usha Bala Chilukuri in San Diego, is of Indian origin with family roots in Andhra Pradesh.

Notably, Vice President Kamala Harris, also of Indian descent, did not visit India during her term, nor did former Vice President Mike Pence despite earlier intentions.
