Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi begins key India visit for boundary talks
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit aimed at reviving momentum in India-China relations ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming trip to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
Wang Yi will hold a fresh round of Special Representatives’ dialogue on the boundary issue with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to call on PM Modi. The meetings will cover the border situation, trade, and possible resumption of flight services between the two countries.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal welcomed Wang Yi on his arrival, noting that the visit will focus on bilateral relations and SR-level discussions. Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the visit would advance the consensus reached between President Xi Jinping and PM Modi last year, enhance political trust, and ensure the stable development of ties.
The visit carries special significance as it comes before PM Modi’s first trip to China since the Galwan clash in 2020, which marked the lowest point in bilateral ties. After four years of confrontation, India and China reached an agreement this year on patrolling along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC), paving the way for renewed dialogue.
In recent months, several high-level engagements have taken place. EAM Jaishankar visited China in July for the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the SCO Defence Ministers’ meet in June, and NSA Ajit Doval participated in the SCO Security Council Secretaries’ meeting the same month, highlighting terrorism as a core concern.
Wang Yi’s New Delhi visit is expected to help both countries reset ties and manage differences constructively ahead of crucial SCO deliberations.
