Women’s T20 WC: Jemimah Rodrigues Aims to ‘Keep It Simple’ and Help India Secure the Title

Indian middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues is determined to contribute significantly to the team’s success in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, starting October 3.

With prior experience playing in the Gulf region, she emphasizes the importance of adapting to the hot and humid conditions in Dubai and Sharjah. India recently defeated West Indies by 20 runs in a warm-up match, gearing up for their first World Cup encounter against New Zealand on October 4.

Reflecting on her role, Jemimah stated, “For me, it’s all about assessing the conditions and playing to the situation. I want to keep it simple and do whatever it takes to help the team win. When I approach it from that perspective, it brings out the best in me and motivates me. I give my all for Team India, and that drives my passion and energy.”

Discussing the weather, she noted, “The first day was tough as we weren’t sure what to expect. The humidity felt a bit like Mumbai, but it’s very hot here. The team is gradually getting used to the heat and conditioning our bodies to adapt. Each day is getting better.”

India is placed in Group A alongside six-time champion Australia, arch-rivals Pakistan, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. After facing the Kiwis, India will take on Pakistan in Dubai on October 7, intensifying their historic rivalry.

Jemimah, born in 2000, acknowledged the longstanding nature of the India-Pakistan rivalry, emphasizing the role of fans in creating an electric atmosphere. “More than the players, it’s the fans who make it special. Being part of that atmosphere is a dream come true. There’s an added responsibility to ensure Team India wins, which brings out the best in us.”

Recalling her impactful 53-run performance against Pakistan in the last T20 World Cup, which led India to a seven-wicket victory, she shared, “The best feeling was hitting the winning runs and leading my team to victory. My parents were in the stadium, and lifting my bat to them was unforgettable. Before that innings, I was low on confidence.”

Jemimah highlighted the pressure of performing well, particularly in a World Cup match against Pakistan, noting, “I focused on how I could contribute instead of dwelling on past performances. With Smriti injured, I knew I had to step up. Richa and I formed a strong partnership, and once we were at the crease, we felt we could win. Hitting the winning runs was an emotional release.”
