Yemen’s Houthis resume attacks on Israeli ships in Arabian and Red seas

Yemen’s Houthi group has announced the resumption of attacks on Israeli ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said on Tuesday, in a statement aired by Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, that the attacks were resumed to support the Palestinians and pressure Israel to reopen the border crossings for humanitarian aid into Gaza.

On Friday, Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi gave Israel a four-day ultimatum to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza or face renewed naval attacks, according to Xinhua news agency.

Previously, al-Houthi had threatened to resume attacks on Israeli cities and Israeli-linked commercial vessels in the Red Sea if Israel violated the Gaza ceasefire.

Between November 2023 and January 19, 2025, the Houthis launched several drone and missile attacks targeting Israeli cities and commercial ships in the Red Sea in support of Palestinians.

The group also attacked US aircraft carriers and naval vessels, threatening to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait if the US continued military shipments to Israel.

The Houthi attacks stopped after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas took effect. However, the Houthis have now warned that operations will resume if the blockade on Gaza remains in place.

The Houthi group, which controls large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, has previously targeted vessels linked to Israel in the Red Sea as an act of support for Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Israel has targeted the Houthis in Yemen five times during the ongoing conflict.
