Ex-President Yoon to face special counsel questioning on Saturday

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will appear before a special counsel team for a second round of questioning this Saturday over allegations related to his attempted imposition of martial law, his lawyers confirmed on Wednesday.

Yoon has accepted Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk’s summons to appear at 9 a.m. on July 6. His legal team noted that while he may be 10–20 minutes late, he does not intend to avoid the appearance. “Generally speaking, his plan is not to avoid an appearance but to proactively go and testify,” the lawyers said in a statement.

The embattled former president had previously defied a summons for questioning on Tuesday (July 1), citing health concerns and the need to prepare for a separate court hearing later this week related to insurrection charges.

Yoon’s refusal to attend the earlier session prompted the special counsel team to issue a new summons, warning that they could seek a detention warrant if he failed to comply again. He had initially requested to delay Saturday’s session by an hour but later agreed to the original time.

The investigation, led by Cho Eun-suk, was launched in June and focuses on Yoon’s alleged attempt to impose martial law in December during his presidency. Last weekend, Yoon underwent his first round of questioning by the special counsel.

The case has sparked intense public and political scrutiny, marking a rare showdown between a former head of state and a special prosecutor. Authorities have stated that the probe builds on earlier investigations by prosecutors and police, now escalated by the special counsel’s mandate.
