South Korean presidential office website closed after Yoon’s ouster

South Korea’s presidential office has taken its official website offline following the Constitutional Court’s ruling that removed President Yoon Suk Yeol from office. A notice on the site indicated that the service is “temporarily unavailable” due to maintenance, with an apology for the inconvenience.

The move came a day after the court upheld Yoon’s impeachment over his controversial martial law declaration in December. In a symbolic gesture, the presidential office in Yongsan lowered the flag featuring the presidential emblem, while government ministries began removing Yoon’s official photographs.

This is not the first time a presidential website has been suspended following an impeachment. In 2017, the Cheong Wa Dae presidential office also deactivated its website after President Park Geun-hye was removed over a high-profile influence-peddling scandal.

Despite the website suspension, social media accounts linked to the presidency, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, still listed Yoon as the incumbent president as of Saturday.

Yoon issued a formal apology through his legal team shortly after the court’s unanimous decision. “I deeply regret not being able to live up to your hopes and expectations,” he said. “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve our nation. I am sincerely grateful for your unwavering support and encouragement, even when I fell short.”

Yoon’s impeachment has sparked political shockwaves across South Korea, with broader implications for the country’s leadership and democratic institutions still unfolding.
