Zelensky proposes new format to protect Ukraine’s skies in talks with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that Ukraine has proposed a new format for protecting its airspace, a plan currently under consideration by the United States.
In a post on X, Zelensky said he discussed the proposal with US President Donald Trump, noting that the two leaders also reviewed broader efforts to push toward “real peace.”
The call came after the Coalition of the Willing summit in Paris, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and other European leaders.
At a joint press conference with Zelensky, Macron announced that 26 countries — mostly European — have pledged to join a “reassurance force” to support Ukraine in the event of a future ceasefire. While troops would not be deployed directly on the front line, they could provide assistance by land, sea, or air.
Zelensky welcomed the pledge as a “concrete step forward”, adding that dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin — whether bilateral or trilateral — is “necessary” to advance peace.
The developments come amid rising tensions over US arms sales to Ukraine. Moscow condemned Washington’s approval of 3,350 extended-range attack munitions, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warning that military aid will only “prolong suffering” and escalate the conflict.
Trump, who met both Putin and Zelensky separately in recent weeks, has floated the idea of a three-way summit to jumpstart negotiations, though Putin has not committed to direct talks with the Ukrainian leader.
Meanwhile, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s security guarantees must be strengthened, noting that preparations for the EU’s 19th sanctions package are underway and that Japan is also considering new measures.
“The main security guarantee is a strong Ukrainian army,” Zelensky emphasized.
