1st Test: Ashwin Declares Bangladesh No Longer an Underdog Team
Ahead of the two-match Test series against India, senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stated that Bangladesh can no longer be considered an underdog team, especially after their impressive 2-0 series victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
“I’m not sure how much that has influenced our dressing room, but they (Bangladesh) have definitely made a statement, asserting themselves as a team on the rise playing some excellent cricket,” Ashwin remarked. “I watched clips from their matches against Pakistan—it was a truly exceptional achievement for Bangladeshi cricket given their recent challenges.”
Ashwin expressed his admiration for the underdog spirit and noted that Bangladesh had previously challenged India during their last visit. “You can’t label them as underdogs anymore; they’ve shown remarkable skill. I’m looking forward to an exciting series.”
He also mentioned that the red-soil pitch at Chepauk will test both teams in various aspects of the game. “Historically, the Test matches here have seen significant runs, except for the low-scoring game against England. The pitch has always provided a good contest; we’re set to play on a red soil pitch again that will offer bounce and reward for bowlers. All facets of the game will come into play.”
At 38, Ashwin shared his thoughts on maintaining peak performance. “The excitement and ambition remain unchanged when I step onto the field. Cricket is a game I truly love, and I’ve cherished every moment. Age is just a number; it’s how you approach the game that matters. The effort you put in over time impacts your energy levels and ability to endure.”
Reflecting on his favorite memory at Chepauk, he recalled making a century and taking five wickets in the 2021 Test against England. “That match was significant as it was played after the Covid break, marking the return of crowds. I was surprised by the turnout and the warm reception. The way that game unfolded for me was special. Chepauk holds incredible memories for me, and returning here always feels meaningful.”
