Champions Trophy: Connolly replaces injured Short in Australia squad
Spin-bowling all-rounder Cooper Connolly has been officially approved as a replacement for injured opener Matthew Short in Australia’s squad for the ongoing 2025 Champions Trophy.
Short sustained a left quadriceps injury during Australia’s rain-affected Group B match against Afghanistan, ruling him out of the tournament.
Connolly, 21, who debuted in ODIs last year in England, was initially a travelling reserve but has now been promoted to the main squad. His inclusion was approved by the ICC Event Technical Committee, which includes Wasim Khan (ICC General Manager – Cricket), Sarah Edgar (ICC Senior Manager – Events), Usman Wahla (PCB Director – International Cricket Operations), and former cricketer Shaun Pollock.
With Australia set to face India in the semi-final at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday, Connolly’s left-arm spin could be a crucial addition to the squad, given the slow pitch conditions.
Australia’s spin options already include leg-spinner Adam Zampa, off-spinner Glenn Maxwell, and part-time options Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne. The squad also has Tanveer Sangha, another leg-spinner, who could be considered if Australia opts for a spin-heavy attack similar to India’s four-spinner strategy in their 44-run win over New Zealand.
Short’s absence might also open up a spot for Jake Fraser-McGurk to open alongside Travis Head, though Fraser-McGurk has struggled in ODIs, passing 16 only once so far.
Australia Squad:
Steve Smith (captain), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Spencer Johnson, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Adam Zampa, Cooper Connolly.
