India women’s hockey team faces Australia in friendlies

The Indian women’s hockey team is preparing to test new player combinations in their upcoming friendlies against Australia’s senior team, following two defeats to the Australia A side. The three-match series begins on May 1 at the Perth Hockey Stadium.

In the first match, India lost 3-5 despite showing resilience after falling behind early. Australia A scored four goals in the first half through Neasa Flynn (3’), Olivia Downes (9’), Ruby Harris (11’), and Tatum Stewart (21’). India responded with goals from Mahima Tete (27’), Navneet Kaur (45’), and Lalremsiami (50’), but couldn’t complete a comeback.

In the second match, India narrowly lost 2-3. Jyoti Singh gave India an early lead in the 13th minute, but Australia A responded with goals from Evie Stansby (17’), Dayle Dolkens (48’), and Jamie-Lee Surha (52’). Sunelita Toppo scored late (59’), but India fell short of equalising.

Now facing the senior Australian team, India will aim to bounce back and improve their performance. The last time these two teams met was during the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023–24, where India secured a 1-0 win.

Captain Salima Tete and vice captain Navneet Kaur lead a 26-member squad featuring several young players. Chief coach Harendra Singh highlighted that the tour is more about gaining experience than results. “We conceded soft goals, but we’ve also been very competitive,” he said.

Singh emphasized giving younger players international exposure. “Some girls are playing outside the country for the first time. We’re identifying those who can perform in the upcoming Pro League in Europe and the World Cup next year,” he added.

Among the standout players so far is Mahima Tete, praised for her mobility and potential. The coach also mentioned Pooja, Sujata, and Ajmina as young talents showing promise. “The key is to play simple hockey and gain valuable experience,” Singh concluded.
