Mitchell Owen replaces Maxwell in PBKS, Ponting calls him exciting

Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has welcomed Mitchell Owen as Glenn Maxwell’s replacement for the remainder of IPL 2025, describing the young Australian as an “exciting package.”

Ponting, who has closely followed Owen’s progress in the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Hobart Hurricanes, expressed confidence in the all-rounder’s ability to make an immediate impact. “We’re all very happy to add Mitchell Owen to our squad for the back end of this season,” said Ponting. “He’s been really impressive, especially over the last 12 months. Our assistant coach, James Hopes, has worked with him at the Hurricanes too.”

Praising his versatility, Ponting added, “He can bat in several positions and bowl very handy medium pace. I’m really excited to have him with us and hope he joins the squad soon.”

Owen has joined PBKS for ₹3 crore and comes with strong credentials. In 34 T20 matches, the 23-year-old has scored 646 runs with a strike rate above 140, including two centuries and a top score of 108. With the ball, he has taken 10 wickets, offering Punjab Kings a valuable seam-bowling option.

On his selection, Owen said, “I’m really excited to join the Punjab Kings and can’t wait to get started.”

PBKS CEO Satish Menon also backed the decision, saying, “We believe Mitch Owen has the skillset and temperament to thrive in the IPL. He’s a young talent with a bright future.”

Punjab Kings will next face Delhi Capitals in a crucial match at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala, on Thursday.
