Women’s T20 WC: Manjrekar Urges India to Rise to the Occasion Against Australia

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar emphasizes the importance of every player stepping up as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team prepares to face defending champions Australia in a pivotal match of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah.

Australia, ranked first, has won all three of its Group A matches, leading to a tight race among India, New Zealand, and Pakistan for the second semifinal spot. India bolstered its chances significantly by defeating Sri Lanka by 82 runs, improving their Net Run Rate (NRR) to +0.567.

“The Indian Women’s T20 team has shown great promise, but the real challenge awaits against Australia. This is a clash of titans, and we need every player to deliver their best. It’s a crucial test of India’s progress in women’s cricket, as Australia sets the standard globally,” stated Manjrekar, an expert with Disney+ Hotstar, ahead of the matchup.

To reach the semifinals, India must win Sunday’s crucial match against Australia at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium and maintain a superior NRR compared to the defending champions or New Zealand, provided they secure victories in their remaining matches.

Even in the event of a loss, India will need Pakistan and New Zealand to have a lower NRR if both teams finish tied on four points. India’s task may have become slightly more manageable, as fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck and captain Alyssa Healy exited the field during Australia’s win over Pakistan due to a dislocated shoulder and a foot injury, respectively.
