Air India flight diverted to Jaipur after suspected hijack alert and bomb threat
An Air India flight travelling from Frankfurt, Germany, to New Delhi was diverted to Jaipur on Wednesday following a suspected hijack alert and a reported bomb threat, according to Indian media reports.
Flight AI-2030 landed safely at Jaipur International Airport at 9:35 a.m. local time and was moved to an isolation bay for security checks. Initial reports indicated that the aircraft was operating normally, while authorities began investigating the alert.
All passengers were reported safe. Airport personnel initiated procedures to disembark passengers and conduct security checks as officials worked to establish what had triggered the diversion.
According to preliminary information cited by India Today, Ahmedabad Air Traffic Control received an emergency signal from the aircraft for several seconds at around 9 a.m. The pilot reportedly activated Squawk 7500, an internationally recognized transponder code used to signal a suspected hijacking or unlawful interference.
Separately, Hindustan Times, citing police sources, reported that a bomb threat had prompted the emergency landing. Authorities had not established the precise circumstances behind the alert in the initial reports.
Airport management said the situation was under control and confirmed that passengers were safe. Further checks were expected to determine whether the threat was credible and whether any security breach had occurred.
The incident comes amid renewed attention to aviation security following a separate Flydubai flight emergency on September 30. Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers, diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia after an altercation was reported in the cockpit.
Flydubai confirmed that an altercation had occurred and said the crew secured the aircraft before landing safely. The captain and first officer were reported injured and taken to hospital, while passengers and other crew members were safe.
Saudi Arabia’s National Transport Safety Centre subsequently began investigating the Flydubai incident in coordination with relevant authorities. Allegations about a possible hijacking attempt have circulated, but they should be distinguished from the airline’s confirmed account of a cockpit altercation.
Investigations into both incidents underscore the importance of established aviation security procedures and careful verification of early reports. Authorities had yet to confirm the cause of the Air India alert.
