Rights group accuses Pakistan of harassing Baloch protesters in Islamabad

Islamabad, Aug 10 (IANS) — The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) on Sunday accused Pakistani authorities of harassing protesters and conducting surveillance during a sit-in in Islamabad, now in its 26th day. Families, including elderly women and children, have been demanding the release of BYC leaders and an end to enforced disappearances in Balochistan.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) voiced alarm over continued disappearances, shrinking civic freedoms, and the passage of the Anti-Terrorism (Balochistan Amendment) Act 2025, which allows 90-day detentions without oversight. HRCP urged the government to withdraw the law, investigate reprisals, and restore trust in democratic processes, warning that impunity is fueling alienation and instability in the province.
