The death toll from the devastating fire at a popular music bar in Bangkok has risen to 30, while 24 people remain in critical condition, as Thai authorities investigate whether negligence and fire safety violations contributed to one of the country’s deadliest entertainment venue disasters in recent years.

The blaze erupted late Sunday night at Rong Beer Na Ladprao, located near Bangkok’s bustling Chatuchak district. Firefighters brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes, but not before it claimed dozens of lives and injured many others. Several victims have since been discharged from hospitals, while those critically injured continue to receive intensive medical treatment.

Authorities believe the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air conditioning unit, although investigators are also examining other possible causes, including faulty wiring and electrical equipment used for the live music performance.

Police are focusing on whether the establishment complied with fire safety regulations. Investigators found that while the single-story venue had four designated exits, some emergency escape routes may have been blocked or difficult to access during the emergency.

According to police officials, one exit near the restrooms—where many victims were discovered—was partially obstructed by a table. Another exit near the kitchen reportedly had a damaged exit sign and a sliding door without a functioning handle, potentially delaying evacuation.

Authorities are also investigating whether gas cylinders stored in the kitchen contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced the formation of a special committee to review the tragedy and identify improvements needed in safety regulations. He also pledged more frequent surprise inspections of entertainment venues across the city.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said witnesses reported seeing smoke near an electrical circuit breaker before the power failed, followed by an explosion and thick smoke that engulfed the venue within minutes.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over fire safety standards in Thailand’s nightlife establishments, with experts emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of building codes, accessible emergency exits, and regular electrical inspections to prevent similar disasters.
