Bangladesh seeks stronger ties with India, hopes for visa resumption
Bangladesh has expressed its commitment to fostering stronger relations with India amid recent diplomatic tensions. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, aims to rebuild ties following political upheaval and concerns over minority rights in Bangladesh.
Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain reiterated Bangladesh’s desire for positive engagement with India, emphasizing mutual respect and cooperation. He also expressed hope that the Indian High Commission would soon resume issuing visas to Bangladeshis.
“The Chief Advisor has made our stance clear. We believe in maintaining constructive relations with India, and the relationship will evolve accordingly,” Hossain stated.
On visa services, he noted, “Visa issuance is a sovereign matter, and we respect India’s decision. However, we hope for a resolution soon to facilitate travel.”
Last month, Hossain met India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during the Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat. Both sides acknowledged challenges in their bilateral relationship and discussed measures to improve ties.
India had suspended visa issuance for Bangladeshi nationals following mass protests and unrest last year. Meanwhile, New Delhi has raised concerns over Bangladesh’s handling of terrorism and treatment of minorities.
Bangladesh is set to assume the chair of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok from April 2-4, where efforts to arrange a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Muhammad Yunus are underway.
