China Confirms LAC Patrolling Agreement as Modi and Xi Arrive in Russia for BRICS Summit

China has confirmed an agreement with India regarding patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the border areas.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian announced that recent diplomatic and military communications between India and China have led to this resolution, which China welcomes. “Moving forward, China will collaborate with India to implement these agreements,” he stated during a media briefing.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri echoed this sentiment on Monday, highlighting the progress made through ongoing discussions. He noted that the agreement would facilitate disengagement and address issues that arose in 2020.

While Misri did not confirm the likelihood of bilateral discussions between the leaders during the BRICS summit in Kazan, he indicated that there would be updates on potential meetings as the schedule evolves.

The two nations have maintained dialogue to address recent transgressions by the Chinese side along the LAC. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that the agreement sets a foundation for peace and stability in the border regions, akin to the conditions before 2020. He acknowledged the complexities of the negotiation process but expressed optimism about the progress made.

China’s confirmation of the agreement came as President Xi Jinping departed for Kazan, where he will participate in the 16th BRICS Leaders’ Meeting alongside Prime Minister Modi. Accompanying Xi are Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
