Dalai Lama congratulates Albanese on re-election

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Sunday extended warm congratulations to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following his re-election, marking his second consecutive term in office.

In a letter to Albanese, the Dalai Lama expressed appreciation for the Australian people and their support for the Tibetan cause.
“It has been a privilege for me to have visited Australia several times over the years. The friendship and affection that Australian brothers and sisters have shown me have touched me deeply,” he wrote.

The spiritual leader also lauded the Australian public’s interest in his global efforts to promote values such as compassion, kindness, and interfaith harmony.
“I take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to the Australian government and its people for their interest in and support for the Tibetan people’s freedom and dignity,” he added, offering his prayers and best wishes for Albanese’s continued leadership.

Prime Minister Albanese, who leads the left-leaning Labor Party, claimed victory in the parliamentary elections held on Saturday, vowing to guide Australia through global uncertainty.

“Couldn’t do this without the support of my incredible local community in Sydney’s Inner West. Grayndler, thank you for everything. We’ll keep working every day to make you proud,” Albanese wrote on social platform X.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton conceded defeat and personally called Albanese to congratulate him.
“We didn’t do well enough during this campaign, that much is obvious tonight, and I accept full responsibility for that,” said Dutton.

It remains to be seen whether Albanese will form a majority government or need the support of minor parties and independents.
