EAM Jaishankar Arrives in Washington for Bilateral Talks with Blinken
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Washington, DC, on Sunday and is scheduled to meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday. Their discussions will cover a variety of bilateral and global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and ongoing unrest in the Middle East.
This visit marks Jaishankar’s first trip to the US capital since the Modi government was re-elected for a third consecutive term. In addition to his meeting with Blinken, he will engage with other senior US officials and Cabinet members.
Jaishankar’s itinerary also includes a session with the think tank community, notably at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP), where he will address the future of US-India relations. CEIP, a prominent nonpartisan think tank focused on international affairs, operates across various regions, including South Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
During the event, Jaishankar will join CEIP President Mariano Florentino Cuellar to discuss the evolving strategic partnership between the United States and India. CEIP emphasized India’s growing global strategic importance, particularly in shaping US foreign policy.
The think tank noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to the US and his bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden illustrate the deepening significance of US-India ties. On September 30, President Biden hosted Modi at his residence in Greenville, Delaware, where they discussed a range of regional and global issues. Modi characterized the talks as “extremely fruitful,” while Biden commended Modi’s knack for uncovering new avenues for collaboration.
In announcing the upcoming session, CEIP remarked, “As global developments accelerate, India’s bilateral ties with the United States have expanded significantly. The two nations have strengthened partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, as well as in defense innovation and critical technologies.”
The event will also explore India’s role in global leadership and opportunities for enhanced cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, democracy, security, and trade.
