Government confirms fire on vessel near Strait of Hormuz; all 24 Indian crew members safe
The Government of India on Monday confirmed a fire incident aboard MT Marivex, a vessel carrying 24 Indian seafarers south of the Strait of Hormuz, and stated that all crew members are safe.
During an inter-ministerial briefing, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) said the fire was reported at approximately 1:30 p.m. Authorities are currently gathering additional information regarding the cause of the incident.
Officials said preliminary reports indicate that all Indian sailors onboard are safe. However, investigations are underway to determine whether the vessel was struck by a projectile or if another factor triggered the fire.
“We are in touch with the ship owners and are working to ascertain the facts. We are also coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and our mission in Oman,” said Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director in the Shipping Division.
The ministry stated that the vessel was operating well south of the Strait of Hormuz and was not carrying cargo at the time of the incident. The ship was reportedly in ballast condition.
Indian authorities are coordinating closely with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian diplomatic missions, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Defence to ensure the continued safety and welfare of the crew members.
The Embassy of India in Muscat also confirmed that it is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with Omani authorities regarding rescue and safety measures.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in the Gulf region due to escalating tensions linked to the ongoing Iran-U.S. conflict. Increased reports of drone activity and maritime security threats have raised concerns among shipping operators navigating one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.
Last month, a separate maritime accident near the Strait of Hormuz resulted in the death of one Indian seafarer and injuries to four others after a cargo dhow caught fire and capsized.
