Gabon appoints new 30-member government
Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has appointed a new 30-member government led by Alexandre Barro Chambrier, who now holds the newly created position of vice-president of the government.
The appointment was announced via a presidential decree issued by Guy Rossatanga Rignault, Secretary-General of the Presidency. The new government includes three ministers of state, with several key portfolios being filled by notable figures.
Henri Claude Oyima, head of the BGFIBANK group, has been appointed minister of state for economy, budget, public accounts, debt, and the fight against the high cost of living. Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, former spokesperson for the Committee for Transition and Restoration of Institutions, is now minister of state for transport and merchant marine. Camelia Ntoutoume-Leclercq continues as minister of state for national education.
Other important appointments include Regis Onanga Ndiaye, who retains his role as foreign minister, and General Brigitte Onkanowa, who remains minister of national defence. Sosthene Nguema Nguema has taken charge as minister of petroleum.
The newly formed cabinet includes 10 women, making up 30% of its members. Among them are Louise Mvono, former World Bank official in Brazzaville, now appointed minister of planning and perspective, and Zenaba Gninga Chaning, a former presidential candidate, who will serve as minister of entrepreneurship and small and medium enterprises.
This government reshuffle follows the constitutional changes adopted through a referendum on November 16, 2024, which abolished the office of the Prime Minister. The vice-president of the government now oversees coordination of government actions.
Earlier in the day, Seraphin Moundounga, former president of the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council, was named vice-president of the republic, replacing Joseph Owondault Berre.
President Brice Nguema, who led Gabon during its transitional phase, was officially elected on April 12, securing 94.85% of the vote.
