German Ambassador Holds ‘Useful Exchange’ with Rahul Gandhi on Indian Politics
The German Ambassador recently met with Rahul Gandhi, engaging in a fruitful discussion about Indian politics.
German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann met with Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Thursday for a “useful exchange” regarding Indian politics and Indo-German relations.
“Great discussion today with the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. Useful exchange on Indian politics and Indo-German relations,” Ackermann posted on X following the meeting.
In March 2023, the German Foreign Ministry had commented on Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, noting the situation and his right to appeal. Spokesperson Andrea Sasse expressed hope that judicial independence and democratic principles would be upheld in the proceedings against him.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded strongly to those comments, stating, “India is not waiting for their views or validation,” and emphasized that such remarks interfere with India’s judicial processes.
Earlier this year, the German Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi was summoned by the MEA after similar comments regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The German Foreign Ministry had stated that Kejriwal is entitled to a fair trial and should benefit from the presumption of innocence.
The MEA reiterated its stance against external interference in India’s internal affairs, affirming the country’s commitment to a robust democracy and rule of law.
Last week, during a visit to Germany, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the growing trade between India and Germany, currently valued at USD 33 billion, and called for strengthened partnerships in the emerging multipolar world. He emphasized the importance of mutual interests in the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions.
