German FM meets PM Modi, lauds India’s call for Ukraine ceasefire and stronger ties
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, expressing appreciation for India’s call to end the Ukraine conflict and reaffirming Berlin’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with New Delhi.
Wadephul highlighted that India and Germany are working closely across multiple domains, including security and defence, trade, skilled labour mobility, and technology cooperation. “We also greatly appreciate India’s call for a ceasefire in Ukraine,” he posted on X after his meeting with Modi.
Earlier in the day, Wadephul held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House. The two leaders discussed enhancing collaboration in semiconductors, digital transformation, talent mobility, and critical technologies. Jaishankar also acknowledged Germany’s strong push for strengthening India-EU ties and expediting the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
“Held detailed discussions on our bilateral agenda as we prepare for the next round of Inter-Governmental Consultations. Also exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
Wadephul’s visit included stops in Bengaluru, where he called the city a “turbine of India’s economic powerhouse.” He inaugurated a new Experience Center at SAP’s campus and visited Mercedes-Benz’s largest development hub outside Germany, which employs over 8,500 people. He also toured ISRO and the Indian Institute of Science, praising India’s investments in research and innovation.
The German minister emphasized the growing interest of Indian professionals and students in Germany, noting that over 64,000 visa applications were filed from Bengaluru in 2024 alone. He stressed the need for creating frameworks to harness this talent pool for mutual growth.
