Sanatan Moitree Sangha appeals for global support as Hindu population declines in Bangladesh
In a heartfelt appeal reflecting growing concern over demographic shifts, Sanatan Moitree Sangha (SMS), a Dhaka-based organization committed to preserving Hindu heritage and identity, is reaching out to individuals and organizations worldwide for support in addressing the declining Hindu population in Bangladesh.
Sumon Sharma, Secretary General of SMS, cites alarming statistics showing a steep drop in the Hindu population in the country. “According to the Bangladesh Government, Hindus comprised 22% of the population in 1951. Today, that number stands at just 7.95%,” Sharma stated. “This trend is not just a number—it’s a reflection of fear, insecurity, and displacement.”
The organization draws attention to broader regional patterns, pointing to the disappearance of Hindu communities in Afghanistan and the ongoing erosion of Hindu presence in parts of Pakistan. SMS warns that if the current trajectory continues unchecked, Bangladesh could soon witness a similar cultural void.
Sharma emphasized that the organization has already begun initiatives aimed at reversing the demographic decline, though he did not elaborate on specific measures. Instead, he extended an open call for support and collaboration.
“If you have any ideas about increasing the number of Hindus, please share them with us,” said Sharma. “Or if there are people or organizations with experience in this area, kindly connect them with us.”
The group invokes the Sanskrit phrase “Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah,” meaning “Dharma protects those who protect it,” to underscore their commitment to spiritual and cultural resilience.
