19-year-old arrested in Illinois over alleged plot to attack Hindu place of worship

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Illinois over an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting that may have targeted a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, police said.

The suspect, Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, was arrested on October 11 after authorities received information about concerning electronic communications he had allegedly shared with another person. The investigation involved the Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to police, investigators recovered a document attributed to Paporakis that allegedly outlined a plan for a mass shooting. The document contained white supremacist and extremist statements, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent.

A search of his residence uncovered a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment. Police also reported finding a tactical vest containing body armor and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.

Prosecutors said Paporakis had made threatening remarks about Indian people to coworkers. According to court reporting, he allegedly told a coworker that he was planning an attack at a Hindu temple in Aurora. Investigators believe he may have intended to carry out the attack on October 11, although authorities have not confirmed the specific place of worship involved.

Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon, specifically a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches. A judge ordered him detained following a court hearing on October 14. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.

The Aurora Police Department said it had been notified of the potential threat and coordinated outreach to Hindu places of worship in the area. Police said the investigation remains active and that authorities had identified no known continuing threat to the public connected with the case.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago welcomed the law enforcement response, saying it was in contact with members of the Indian community and monitoring developments.

Authorities have urged the public to rely on official updates as the investigation continues.
