India calls out Pakistan’s terror links as it assumes UNSC presidency

On the eve of Pakistan taking over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, India publicly exposed Islamabad’s continued support for cross-border terrorism, using a diplomatic exhibition to highlight the recent Pahalgam massacre and broader global terror links.

As part of a preemptive move, India unveiled an exhibition titled The Human Cost of Terrorism at the main entrance of the UN building — the route diplomats use daily. The display prominently featured terror acts linked to Pakistan, including its role in sheltering Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the exhibit was a message to the international community about the devastating impact of terrorism and a call to hold state sponsors accountable.

Pakistan assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council on July 2 through a routine alphabetical rotation among members. While the presidency allows it to chair meetings, convene high-level events, and propose open debates, its power is limited by council procedures and member consensus.

Pakistan’s envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will chair most meetings, though Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar may lead some sessions. Pakistan has aligned itself closely with China and Russia on key issues such as Iran and the Israel-Hamas conflict, often clashing with U.S. positions.

During last month’s Council debate on Iran, Pakistan condemned U.S. and Israeli actions and co-sponsored a draft resolution with China and Russia, which was later sidelined by ceasefire developments and likely headed for a U.S. veto.

While Pakistan may use its presidency to push topics like Gaza or draw parallels to Kashmir, past attempts to link Palestine with Kashmir have failed to gain international traction.
