India leads global push for peacekeeper safety and accountability: UN

India is playing a key role in global peacekeeping by leading efforts to hold accountable those who attack UN peacekeepers, said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations.

India chairs the 39-member Group of Friends for Promoting Accountability for Crimes Against Peacekeepers, established in 2022. That year, India also spearheaded a UN Security Council resolution urging host nations to investigate and prosecute such crimes, and called for a UN database of attacks.

So far in 2025, five peacekeepers have been killed.

Lacroix, attending India’s first Conference for Women Peacekeepers, also emphasized increasing women in leadership roles. Of 5,375 Indian peacekeepers, 151 are women. India deployed the first all-women police unit in Liberia in 2007.
