India’s peacekeeping role embodies ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ spirit: Army Chief at UN Conclave

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to global peacekeeping, saying it reflects the nation’s ancient ethos of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ — the world is one family — and ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ — India as a friend to all.

Addressing the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries (UN TCC) Chiefs’ Conclave 2025 in New Delhi, General Dwivedi highlighted India’s long-standing role as one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. “India has sent approximately 300,000 men and women across 51 of the 71 UN peacekeeping missions worldwide,” he said, noting that Indian troops have served “with unflinching resolve” while gaining vital operational experience.

He emphasized that peacekeeping in the modern era faces “unprecedented challenges,” including hybrid warfare, disruptive technologies, and disinformation. “A peacekeeper today is not just a security provider but also a diplomat, a nation builder, and sometimes the only conduit of information in conflict zones,” he said.

Dwivedi stressed the need for troop-contributing nations to integrate advanced technologies, improve rapid deployment, and enhance interoperability to strengthen UN missions. “Our unity is our greatest strength,” he asserted, calling for collaborative training and innovative resource management.

The Army Chief said hosting the conclave in India is both “a privilege and a reaffirmation” of collective resolve to preserve global peace. He also underscored India’s readiness to share indigenous technologies and adopt best practices from partner nations to enhance operational effectiveness.

“India remains deeply committed to the UN’s noble mission of peace,” he concluded.
