India-US trade deal likely in coming months, says US Ambassador Sergio Gor
Sergio Gor on Thursday expressed strong confidence that India and the United States will finalise a landmark bilateral trade agreement in the “coming weeks and months,” signalling growing momentum in economic relations between the two countries.
Speaking at the Annual Leadership Summit of American Chamber of Commerce in India in New Delhi, Gor said both governments are actively working to complete an interim trade arrangement aimed at expanding economic opportunities and strengthening commercial ties.
“President Trump’s goal is to facilitate bilateral trade in a way that creates lucrative opportunities for American businesses and workers,” Gor said during his address.
He noted that negotiations have accelerated in recent months, with Indian officials visiting Washington in April to advance discussions. A US delegation is also expected to travel to India next month for additional talks focused on finalising the agreement.
According to Gor, the proposed deal is expected to improve market access, reduce trade barriers and provide greater certainty for businesses operating in both countries.
“This agreement, if done right, will strengthen supply chains, catalyse new investments and drive sustained inclusive growth,” he said.
The ambassador acknowledged that trade negotiations often require time and compromise, pointing out that the recently concluded India-European Union trade discussions took nearly 19 years to reach completion.
“Negotiations have been ongoing for a year and a half, but compared to other global trade agreements, we are moving very efficiently,” Gor added.
The remarks reflect the growing strategic importance of India-US economic ties as both countries seek to deepen cooperation across trade, technology, manufacturing and supply-chain resilience.
Gor also highlighted the rising role of Indian companies in the US economy, noting that Indian businesses committed more than $20 billion in investments during the annual Select Investment Summit in the United States.
He said the US Embassy in India ranked first globally in facilitating investment commitments into the American economy, underscoring the growing scale of bilateral economic engagement.
Meanwhile, Piyush Goyal confirmed that a US trade delegation is expected to visit India next month to continue discussions.
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Goyal said bilateral talks have been progressing actively following recent meetings between Indian and American officials in Washington.
The proposed trade agreement is expected to become a major pillar of the broader India-US strategic partnership, particularly at a time when both nations are seeking stronger economic collaboration amid shifting global supply chains and rising geopolitical competition.
