Significant shift in India-US ties as trade talks resume after months of tensions

The US media has welcomed the renewed warmth between India and the United States after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump exchanged positive messages on trade talks, marking a “significant shift” following months of heightened tensions.

Fox Business reported the resumption of negotiations with the headline: “Modi and Trump signal mutual optimism for US-India trade negotiations moving ahead.” It said the dialogue reflects both nations’ determination to resolve disputes, though challenges in agriculture and energy remain.

Announcing the breakthrough on Truth Social, President Trump said: “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations.” He also described PM Modi as a “very good friend” and noted that he looks forward to speaking with him in the coming weeks.

PM Modi responded on X, affirming the “limitless potential” of the partnership and stressing that India and the US are “close friends and natural partners.” He said he is confident the trade dialogue will lead to mutually beneficial outcomes.

Bloomberg, in an editorial titled “Don’t Let Tariffs Tank the US-India Relationship,” urged Washington not to jeopardize ties with the world’s largest democracy. The editorial highlighted India’s critical role in the Quad alongside Japan and Australia, calling the country vital for diversifying supply chains, advancing technology, and countering Chinese pressure.

It also advised India to remain focused on long-term gains in defense and technology cooperation, despite disputes. However, Bloomberg cautioned that “mood swings” in Washington may delay a final agreement.

The renewed trade engagement is being viewed as a turning point, with hopes that it will help stabilize and expand one of the world’s most important strategic partnerships.
