Indian Navy chief meets Sri Lankan PM to boost maritime security cooperation

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi held wide-ranging talks with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo on Tuesday, reinforcing the shared commitment of both nations to deepen maritime security cooperation and expand defence ties.

Admiral Tripathi, on a four-day official visit to Sri Lanka, called on the Prime Minister to discuss maritime security, training exchanges, and naval capacity building. The Indian Navy noted that the discussions reaffirmed the enduring partnership in the maritime domain and emphasized enhanced operational engagements, joint capacity-building initiatives, and active participation in multilateral forums such as the International Fleet Review, MILAN, and the Admiral’s Cup Regatta.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya stressed the strategic importance of oceans for maritime nations and highlighted the need for collective responsibility to safeguard them. She called for deeper collaboration in tackling transnational challenges such as anti-narcotics operations, illegal fishing, marine pollution, and terrorism at sea.

The Sri Lankan leader also underlined the importance of stronger coordination in search and rescue operations, greater information sharing, and expanded training opportunities between the two navies.

According to the Indian Navy, the meeting reflected the “shared vision” of India and Sri Lanka to advance peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean Region through mutual trust and cooperation.

During his visit, Admiral Tripathi will also address the 12th Galle Dialogue 2025, an international maritime conference focused on “Maritime Outlook of the Indian Ocean under Changing Dynamics.”

The visit underscores India and Sri Lanka’s growing strategic alignment, reaffirming their joint commitment to regional peace and security in the Indian Ocean.
