Iraqi, Iranian FMs discuss regional security and US-Iran nuclear talks

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation on regional developments, with a focus on enhancing security and ongoing US-Iran nuclear negotiations, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said Monday.

During the call, Hussein reaffirmed Iraq’s support for all efforts that contribute to strengthening regional stability and security. He also welcomed the progress being made in the Iran-US talks, which have resumed after a long pause.

According to a ministry statement, Araghchi briefed Hussein on the status of the indirect negotiations with the United States, describing the discussions as progressing “well.” He confirmed that a second round of talks would be held soon, again under the mediation of Oman.

The talks, aimed at easing tensions and finding a pathway to reengage over Iran’s nuclear program, began last Saturday in Muscat, where both Tehran and Washington described the dialogue as “constructive.”

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani later announced that the next round of US-Iran nuclear negotiations would be held in Rome. Italy agreed to host the meeting after requests from the involved parties and Oman. Speaking from Expo 2025 in Osaka, Tajani stated that Italy is ready to support peace-building efforts through dialogue.

In a gesture to bolster bilateral relations, Araghchi also extended an official invitation to Hussein to visit Iran, the Iraqi ministry confirmed.

Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015 with six world powers to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018, prompting Iran to scale back compliance. Renewed talks have been aimed at reviving the deal or reaching new understandings.
