Jamaat-e-Islami set to regain party registration, election symbol in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami is expected to regain its political registration and electoral symbol (scales) following a Supreme Court verdict overturning a previous High Court ruling. Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Sanaullah confirmed that the Election Commission is taking steps to restore the party’s registration and symbol.

The move comes after years of legal battles that began in 2013 when Jamaat’s registration was declared illegal. The party was formally deregistered in 2018. A recent mass uprising that ousted the Awami League-led government paved the way for Jamaat to file a new petition. The interim government under Muhammad Yunus later lifted the ban on Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir.
