Kim Jong-un to stand with Xi, Putin at China’s military parade: Seoul’s NIS

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will appear “side by side” with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin during China’s upcoming military parade in Beijing, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) said Tuesday.

Kim departed Pyongyang on Monday aboard his private train and crossed into China at dawn. He is expected to arrive in Beijing late Tuesday after a 20-hour journey, according to lawmakers briefed by the NIS. His attendance at Wednesday’s parade in Tiananmen Square—commemorating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II—marks his first appearance on the multilateral diplomatic stage.

The spy agency assessed that Kim’s participation is aimed at restoring ties with Beijing and securing Chinese economic support, while also showcasing trilateral solidarity with Moscow and Beijing. On the sidelines, Kim is “highly likely” to hold separate bilateral talks with Xi and Putin, though the chances of a three-way summit are considered low.

Accompanying Kim are Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, party vice director Hyon Song-wol, and international department director Kim Song-nam. His wife, Ri Sol-ju, and sister, Kim Yo-jong, may also be part of the delegation, the NIS said.

The agency also reported that North Korea is preparing to dispatch another 6,000 troops to Russia, in what would be the third round of reinforcements since October last year. Around 13,000 soldiers and conventional weapons have already been sent, with about 2,000 North Korean troops estimated killed in combat.

Separately, Pyongyang is planning a large-scale military parade on October 10 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, mobilizing 10,000 participants and possibly reviving its mass gymnastics show after five years.
